Script

(Soft room tone. A distant door closes. The room settles.)

PROTECTOR (urgent, hushed):
She’s gone.

NEWCOMER (panicked):
Gone where? I thought she was just getting water.

FORGOTTEN (quiet, knowing):
She took the backpack.

(A small silence.)

PROTECTOR:
That doesn’t mean anything. She always takes the backpack.
It’s just… what she does.

NEWCOMER:
You said that last time.

PROTECTOR:
Last time was different.

FORGOTTEN:
Last time, she didn’t come back until morning.

(The room wallas softly.)

PROTECTOR (taking charge):
Quiet down everyone...

NEWCOMER:
So… what happens to us if she doesn’t come back?

PROTECTOR (too fast):
She will. She always does. That’s how this works.

FORGOTTEN:
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it isn’t.

NEWCOMER (small):
I don’t want to be in the dark.

PROTECTOR:
You’re not. You’re with us.
(A beat.)

FORGOTTEN:
That’s new.

PROTECTOR (bristling):
What’s that supposed to mean?

FORGOTTEN:
You usually say you’re on her side.
(A small silence.)

PROTECTOR:
Someone has to keep watch.

NEWCOMER:
Over what?

PROTECTOR:
Over… when she comes back.

FORGOTTEN:
Or over what you’re afraid of losing.

(The PROTECTOR does not answer.)

NEWCOMER:
If she doesn’t come back… do we still get to be here?

FORGOTTEN:
We are here whether we are chosen or not.

PROTECTOR (softening):
But being chosen helps.

(A quiet moment.)

NEWCOMER:
I can stay awake.
I’m good at staying awake.

PROTECTOR:
You don’t have to.

FORGOTTEN:
None of us do.

(Another beat.)

PROTECTOR:
We’ll wait together.

NEWCOMER:
Together?

PROTECTOR:
Yeah. Together.

FORGOTTEN (gentle):
That is new too.

(The room settles into stillness.)

NEWCOMER (soft):
If she comes back… can you tell me what she’s like?

PROTECTOR:
I can tell you what she laughs like.

FORGOTTEN:
And I can tell you how she used to hold me.

(A final quiet beat.)

PROTECTOR:
She’s gone…
but we’re still here. Together.

(Silence.)

Notes from the Mob

April’s challenge leans into full character acting through a three-character ensemble performed by a single actor. The focus shifts from external action to internal stakes, where each character’s emotional need drives the scene more than the situation itself.

Actors explored clear differentiation in rhythm, pitch, and intention while maintaining a shared emotional space. The challenge was not just to create three distinct voices, but to make them feel like they exist together in the same room, responding to one another in real time.

Sound design remained subtle and supportive. Light room tone, small environmental textures, and restrained use of space helped ground the scene without pulling focus from performance. Silence played a key role, allowing moments to land and emotional shifts to breathe.

This month’s submissions highlight the balance between playfulness and honesty, with performances that embrace the premise while staying rooted in something real.

You may notice some creative interpretation in delivery and staging. That’s part of the work. Enjoy!
